Taveuni Honeymoon VacationsSo what kind of honeymoon vacation is possible in Taveuni? If you are looking for casinos or shopping malls, Taveuni is not for you. However, if you are looking for a romantic tropical location combining coral reef and rainforests, black and white sand beaches and dramatic volcanic shorelines, helpful and genuinely friendly staff and local villagers, peace and serenity, time-honoured Fijian culture with up-to-date hospitality .. then, yes, Taveuni is an ideal choice for your honeymoon. This is not to say that your entire Fiji honeymoon vacation here needs to revolve around hammocks, relaxing on the beach, watching the sun set with a tropical cocktail or wine, and gazing in awe at a myriad of stars in the night sky. Taveuni also offers adventure of a special kind. Scuba Diving For divers, Taveuni offers world-class dive sites on the famous Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait, such as the Great White Wall, Jerry's Jelly, the Cabbage Patch ... and more! Nicknamed the "Soft Coral Capital of the World" Fiji has great diving. Here in Taveuni, the ocean flows through the Somosomo Strait not only feeding the marine life of its wonderful reefs with fresh nutrients, but supporting a large variety of pelagic fish, turtles, and reef sharks. Even nomadic whales (seasonal). Fishing For the same reason, Taveuni offers honeymooners the opportunity to take sport and game fishing trips. Be enthralled by marlin, tuna, wahoo, walu, mahi-mahi and other great fish. Snorkelling Snorkelling varies around the island. At most destinations you are able to snorkel right off the beach or water's edge. Resorts and other accommodation options usually also offer snorkelling trips - to the Rainbow Reef, Korolevu Island, or other small offshore islands - depending on the location of where you are staying. Kayaking Most destinations will have kayaks available to you. Paddle along Taveuni's unique coastline, with coves and bays. Or - depending on your location - out to an offshore island. Jet Ski This is the latest activity on Taveuni - currently only offered at Paradise Taveuni resort (formerly Susies Plantation Resort). Sunset Cruises Taveuni Island lies in a north-east / south-west orientation, with most resorts or lodging options facing a north-west direction. This is ideal for sunset watching and some resorts - such as Maravu Beach Plantation Resort & Spa - have sunset cruises out in the Strait to make the most of the glorious sunsets. There are some accommodation options at Matei that are around the tip of the island, and though they do not see the sun actually dipping over the horizon, on the plus side one can see heavenly sunrises and moonrises as well as the gorgeous back-glows of sunsets that sometimes cover the entire sky. Bird-watching and Hiking Taveuni has unique birdlife, such as the Orange Dove and the Silktail, to be found nowhere else in the world. It is no wonder that Taveuni Island attracts interest from birdwatchers around the world. Even if you are not a dedicated birder, there are many guided hikes in the beautiful rainforests in Taveuni and local guides will be able to point out to you the various birds that grace the natural verdant slopes of the island. Waterfalls and Waterfall Hikes No trip to Taveuni is complete without at least one waterfall visit ! Either the famous waterfalls at Bouma in Tavoro National Park, or the magical waterfalls of the Wainibau river, accessed by a picturesque hike alongside the beautiful Lavena Beach. Access to the unique waterfalls (two of them cascade into a rocky ampitheatre) is finally achieved by a short refreshing swim in the cool Wainibau river, most welcome after the hike! Enjoy a packed lunch, then hike back along the coast to your vehicle transfer. There are other waterfalls to enjoy also, but those are the most famous ones and most accommodation owners offer trips as an adventure option to your honeymoon. To bathe in a remote and beautiful waterpool together, surrounded by the rainforest and exotic tropical flowers such as flowering gingers ... now that is a romantic memory to treasure. In fact some resorts can arrange your wedding by a waterfall also if you are getting married on Taveuni! Horseback Riding On Taveuni there are many expansive coconut plantations that date back to Fiji's colonial past of over a hundred years ago. Many are still active plantations, with beef cattle, and copra production. Share a horseback ride with your loved one through a plantation and reflect on Taveuni's romantic history. Maravu Resort - on over 65 acres - was once a plantation and has its own horses available to its guests. Elsewhere resorts can organise your horseback rides with neighbouring plantations. Golf and Tennis at Taveuni Estates There is a 9-hole golf course at Taveuni Estates (Soqulu) that overlooks the ocean. There are also tennis courts. Your resort will be able to help you with costs and trips. Visit to a Fijian Village The Fijian culture delights visitors young and old. From time-old activities such as basket and mat weaving, traditional dance (the 'meke'), celebratory feast cooked in an underground hot stone oven (the 'lovo'), coconut tree uses and coconut tree climbing, the beating of the traditional drum (the 'lali') and more. The genuine unforced friendliness of the Fijian people, the close-knit communities and the delightful young children, will make you fall in love with Taveuni. Taveuni Sightseeing In addition to all the natural romantic wonders of Taveuni Island, there are other interesting things to see, such as the old Catholic Mission at Wairiki that is picturesquely sited overlooking the Somosomo Strait - a visit to the church on Sundays is divine as Fijians have wonderful voices, harmonise with the least effort, and are mostly unaccompanied by instruments. Another interesting point of interest is the 180 degree Meridian marker between Wairiki and Waiyevo that - until the introduction of the International Dateline (which detoured the time zone change around Fiji) meant that the people of Taveuni could step from one day into the next at this point. Taveuni is one of the very few land masses in the world that is crossed by the 180 degree meridian line. |
